As the SCG readies for its annual transition from footy to cricket, three sports fans are being offering a shot at owning a piece of its hallowed turf.
Thanks to horticultural supplier Yates, the lucky trio will get to take home a slice of the famous venue’s surface to install in their own backyard.
While not the actual blades upon which AFL legend Buddy Franklin trod to nail his 1000th goal in 2023, there’s no denying the grass has hosted some of the biggest moments in Australian footy, soccer and cricket.
Entering the competition requires describing, in 50 words or less, the details of a favourite SCG sporting or entertainment moment.
The turf will be freshly lifted during field renovations at the end of September and delivered straight to the winners’ backyards.
Few patches of Australian grass can boast the sporting pedigree of the SCG, according to Yates horticulturist Angie Thomas.
”From international cricket to footy blockbusters … Australians have made memories, celebrated victories and watched history unfold at the SCG,” she said.
”This turf has been under the feet of some of the biggest names in sport.”
The winners of the competition are being encouraged to put their prized patches to good use.
”Whether it becomes the centrepiece of a backyard cricket pitch, a conversation starter at the next BBQ or just the most flex-worthy patch of lawn on the street, this living sporting keepsake deserves to be treated like a legend,” Ms Thomas said.
”When it comes to Australian sporting history, you can’t get much closer to the action than having the turf in your own backyard.”
The chosen three will also get an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the ground, four tickets to The Lounge for a Twenty20 match, and a consultation with a Yates lawn expert.
The competition closes after the SCG is no longer required for scheduled sporting use or training, and the turf-removal schedule has been confirmed.
