A new study has found that over a quarter of men have admitted to “secretly enjoying” watching romance films with their partner.

The poll, commissioned by Netflix, surveyed over 2000 Brits in relationships and found that half of those who view the pastime as a guilty pleasure would never tell their friends.

Despite this, British couples watch four films a week together on average, with nine in ten believing the pastime brings them closer together. A large percentage of respondents also agreed that they enjoy participating in shared activities during movie night, such as eating snacks (72 per cent) and holding hands (41 per cent).

The results found that Pretty Woman (31 per cent) and Bridget Jones’s Diary (26 per cent) topped the list of favourite ‘top guilty pleasure watches’, with Dirty Dancing and Notting Hill at (25 per cent), and Twilight rounding out the top five at (24 per cent).

With the complete Twilight Saga set to be released on Netflix in the UK from September 11, it’s likely that many couples will watch all editions together – with with New Moon (23 per cent), Breaking Dawn Part 1 and Eclipse (both 20 per cent) and Breaking Dawn Part 2 (19 per cent) all ranking highly in the poll.

And it goes to show how engrossed male viewers are in the action, with the poll finding that most men (73 per cent) vote “Team Edward” (Robert Pattison) as who they would prefer as Bella’s love interest, with half (50 per cent) agreeing that Bella made the right choice ending up with him.
