US President Donald Trump on Friday used his address at the Faith & Freedom Coalition’s 2026 Policy Conference to project religion as central to America’s identity and sharply criticise Democrats over their record on religious freedom.
Addressing supporters at the conference, Trump declared that religion had returned to prominence in the United States.
“Religion is back in our country bigger and stronger than it has been in many, many years,” Trump said, presenting faith as an essential pillar of national strength.

He argued that religion and belief in God were necessary for a country to thrive, telling the audience, “To be a great nation, you have to have religion and God.”
“If you don’t have that, it just doesn’t seem to work out, does it?” he added.
Trump also used the speech to renew criticism of Democratic administrations and institutions, alleging that religious Americans had faced unfair treatment in recent years.
Claiming that federal agencies had targeted people of faith, Trump said Catholics were subjected to scrutiny under the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
“Under Democrats, Catholics were targeted by the FBI,” he said.
The US President also referred to anti-abortion activism, alleging that elderly activists faced legal action over prayer demonstrations.
“Pro-life grandmothers were put in jail for praying,” Trump said.
Expanding his criticism further, Trump claimed members of the US military had been removed from service because of their religious beliefs.
“Members of our military were thrown out of the armed forces for their religious beliefs,” he said.
The remarks reflected Trump’s continued emphasis on faith, conservative values and religious liberty themes that have remained central to his political messaging ahead of key policy and electoral debates in the United States.
