Rs 604 crore revamp: Yogi government gives major push to UP’s council schools

From ageing classrooms to safer, modern learning spaces, Uttar Pradesh’s council-run schools are set for a major makeover. The Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government has approved Rs 604 crore to rebuild and repair 3,126 primary and upper primary schools, aiming to provide better learning environments for the Gen Z and Gen Alpha generation.

The Basic Education Department has released Rs 302 crore as the first payment, with construction and repair work expected to begin soon as per prescribed standards.

RS 344.52 CRORE FOR PRIMARY SCHOOLS

A total of Rs 344.52 crore will be spent on the repair and reconstruction of 2,243 council-run primary schools. Around Rs 15.36 lakh has been earmarked for each school, with Rs 172.26 crore already released for the work.

The funds will also support improvements in basic student facilities. The work will be monitored by district and state-level committees.

RS 259.95 CRORE FOR UPPER PRIMARY SCHOOLS

Another Rs 259.95 crore has been allocated for the reconstruction and repair of 883 council-run upper primary schools. Around Rs 29.44 lakh will be spent on each school, with Rs 129.97 crore released as the first instalment.

The Yogi government said the initiative is focused on improving school infrastructure and ensuring students have access to safe and better-maintained learning environments. The large-scale revamp is expected to give thousands of council schools a much-needed facelift and create classrooms better suited to the needs of today’s young learners.
