Comedian Samay Raina turned friend Gaurav Munjal’s latest business milestone into a viral roast. Congratulating the Unacademy co-founder on the company’s buyout, Samay shared a picture with Munjal and a mutual friend, pairing it with a savage, tongue-in-cheek jab about the edtech platform’s sale.

“Congratulations to my friend @gauravmunjal for selling his company @unacademy for just 200 million dollars when he could have sold it earlier at 3.4 billion dollars (sic),” Samay’s Instagram story read.

The cheeky post didn’t go unnoticed by Munjal, who appeared to play along with the comedian’s humour. Sharing the comedian’s post on X, the Unacademy co-founder wrote, “Who needs enemies when you have such friends.)”

The playful exchange between the two friends quickly became the highlight, with Samay’s congratulatory message carrying a generous dose of sarcasm.

Edtech company upGrad has officially acquired rival Unacademy in an all-stock deal worth about $206 million (Rs 19.55 billion). Unacademy CEO Gaurav Munjal confirmed the deal has closed after six months of talks. As part of the agreement, Unacademy shareholders received upGrad shares, while angel investors were paid out in cash.

Launched in 2015, Unacademy burned significant cash during the 2020–2021 pandemic boom, fiercely competing with rivals like Byju’s as online education surged. But when physical classrooms returned and online demand crashed, the company was forced to cut expenses, lay off staff, and overhaul its operations.
