Former Socceroos defender Sasa Ognenovski has been appointed new coach of Macarthur FC following the departure of Mile Sterjovski.

Ognenovski, 47, has signed a two-season deal with the Bulls, who wasted little time in announcing a replacement for Sterjovski, whose contract was terminated by mutual consent this week.

“It is a privilege to be working at the highest level of football in Australia, and I understand the responsibility that comes with representing this club, its supporters and the wider community,” said Ognenovski, who has never previously coached an A-League club and whose most recent head coaching role was in 2021 with NPL Victoria club Dandenong City.

The former Roar, Adelaide United and Sydney FC centre-back had been serving as an assistant coach at another NPL Victoria club, Preston Lions, where he was also the football director.

“I am grateful for the opportunity and cannot wait to get started,” Ognenovski said.

“After speaking with the people involved, it became clear that we share the same desire to build a strong football program, establish high professional standards and create an environment in which players can perform and develop.”

“I believe there is enormous potential here, and the opportunity to help shape the club’s next chapter was one I was extremely excited to accept.”

“Bulls fans can expect relentless effort, total commitment and an entertaining brand of football. We will play forward with bravery and purpose.”

Ognenovski earned 22 Socceroos caps between 2010 and 2013, and was also named the 2010 Asian footballer of the year after captaining Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma to AFC Champions League glory.
