Adam Scott is set to renew his Australian Open rivalry with Rory McIlroy after confirming he’ll tee up in both the national championship and the Australian PGA..
Loyal to his home tour throughout his long career, former world No.1 Scott will seek to win the Joe Kirkwood Cup for a third time when the Australian PGA returns to Sydney at The Lakes from November 26-29.
A week later he’ll join marquee signing McIlroy at Kingston Heath in Melbourne when he chases a second Australian Open title – and possibly also some sweet revenge on the Northern Irishman.
McIlroy famously denied Scott at the 2013 Australian Open, when the Australian was at the peak of his powers, having won his historic Masters title in April.
Scott had put himself on the brink of the coveted Australian triple crown as he took a four-shot lead into the Open final round after winning the Australian PGA and Masters.
It’s a painful memory for Scott and his legion of home fans that he bogeyed the final hole while McIlroy birdied to win by a shot.
There would be some nice symmetry if 46-year-old Scott were to turn the tables at Kingston Heath this summer as McIlroy is himself coming off a Masters triumph – his second consecutive.
“I’ve always loved playing the Australian Open,” said 2009 champion Scott. “It has so much incredible history and is a tournament every Australian golfer holds in such high regard. It’s a title we all want to win.
“Kingston Heath is a special place and will be an amazing challenge. It’s a course where strategy and patience are rewarded, so it’ll be really exciting to see how some of the world’s best take it on.”
Scott was not far off at the Australian Open last year, finishing fifth, four shots behind winner Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen at Royal Melbourne, when Masters champion McIlroy was a further four shot back and tied 14th.
