A dog involved in a terrifying attack on a jogger is set to be euthanised, unless its owner is successful in appealing a council decision.

Ajay Malik, 37, was jogging in the northern Brisbane suburb of Chermside when he was viciously mauled by two dogs on October 16.

He remains in the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital with severe injuries to his face and upper arm.

One of the dogs, a bulldog-American Staffordshire terrier cross, was shot by police responding to the incident and died several days later.

The other dog, a bulldog-boxer cross, was taken into Brisbane City Council custody the following day.

Council originally issued a destruction order the day after the attack, but withdrew the order on October 21, instead issuing a dangerous dog declaration.

The owner was given 14 days to respond.

With no response by November 4, the council has reinstated the destruction order – giving the owner another 14 days to request a review.

Councillor Sarah Hutton said the attack on Mr Malik was shocking and the council was determined to see the strongest possible action taken against the owner.

“The owner was given 14 days to respond and we’ve heard nothing, so we’re now taking the next step to have the surviving dog humanely euthanised.”

Under state legislation, the owner could face prosecution with maximum penalties of fines of more than $120,000, or up to two years in prison.

A Gofundme page set up to support Mr Malik in his recovery has raised more than $23,000.

The body of a man was found in the same area two days after the attack on Mr Malik.

Police are continuing to investigate whether the man’s death was also linked to the dogs.
