An elderly woman has been charged with the murder of her half-brother in Far North Queensland who allegedly weighed 29kg at the time of his death.
Isaac “Ike” Oar, 56, who had Down syndrome and was non-verbal, was found unresponsive in his home on Alice St in Ayr on August 10, 2023.
Police at the time treated his death as suspicious.
“Investigations into the death of Isaac, who has Down syndrome and was non-verbal, have been complex, with detectives conducting extensive and thorough inquiries into his health, care and treatment throughout his life,” a police statement read at the time.
Detectives said the man was “experiencing serious malnourishment weighing just 29kg at the time of his death”.
At the time of the man’s death, Detective Inspector Jason Shepherd said the 56-year-old hadn’t received professional medical attention in more than a decade.
“He was only 29 kilos – that doesn’t happen overnight,” he said.
“There has (allegedly) obviously been years of neglect in some format.”
On Tuesday, a 70-year-old Forest Lake woman, believed to be the man’s half-sister, was arrested and charged with one count of murder (domestic violence).
She is expected to face Brisbane Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
