A service station worker has died several days after he was crushed under the wheels of a ute as he was checking on the fuel tanks at a petrol station on the NSW Mid North Coast.

The 36-year-old service station worker, who is yet to be identified, became “trapped under a ute” on the forecourt of the United Petroleum petrol station in east Coffs Harbour about 7pm on Tuesday.

Police and paramedics rushed to his aid, and he was taken to hospital in a critical condition.

A 44-year-old woman was arrested at the scene and charged with negligent driving causing grievous bodily harm and breaching bail.

On Wednesday, NSW Police Acting Inspector Amanda Crouch said the worker had become “pinned beneath” the vehicle as the driver left the station immediately after paying for her petrol.

“I understand it was raining at the time, but I don’t believe that was a contributing factor,” Inspector Crouch said.

The woman was granted bail and will reappear in court on October 28.
