A state’s sheriff’s officers will use body-worn cameras on the job, as footage of a dramatic courtroom incident captured during a pilot program has been released.

The trial, which took place across NSW in 2024, was introduced to help deter aggressive behaviour towards sheriff’s officers and help them feel safer at work.

Sheriff’s officers provide security at courts and help manage juries.

They also action court orders, which can involve seizing property and delivering summonses – a role that leaves them vulnerable to physical violence and verbal abuse.

In footage captured during the trial, obtained by AAP, a number of court officers are seen tackling a man to the ground and restraining him at Sydney’s Downing Centre Court.

NSW Attorney General Michael Daley said the body-worn cameras used in the pilot program helped de-escalate volatile situations.

“Sheriff’s officers play a crucial role in the administration of justice and it’s vital they feel safe while on the job,” he said.

More than 350 body-worn cameras will be rolled out to all of the state’s officers by November, starting with those working in Sydney’s courts.

Sheriff of NSW Tracey Hall said body-worn cameras were already standard for law enforcement officers across the world.

“The statewide rollout will help sheriff’s officers de-escalate tense situations and give both them and the public peace of mind that a recording is available if needed,” she said.
