India have suffered a major setback at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026, with off-spinner Shreyanka Patil ruled out of the remainder of the tournament after sustaining an ankle injury. The all-rounder was injured during India’s Group A encounter against the Netherlands on Wednesday.

On the opening delivery of the sixth over, Shreyanka’s outing took a painful turn. Operating from around the wicket, the off-spinner tossed one up on middle stump, which Phebe Molkenboer worked into the leg side. After the initial stop at midwicket failed to cut off the run completely, Shreyanka chased the ball herself. While bending to collect it, she lost her footing and landed heavily, suffering the injury.

The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 Event Technical Committee has approved leg-spinner Prema Rawat as Patil’s replacement in the Indian squad. Rawat, who was already in England as part of the India A setup, will now link up with the senior squad for the remainder of the tournament.

“The Event Technical Committee of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 has approved Prema Rawat as a replacement for Shreyanka Patil in the India squad. Rawat was named as a replacement after Patil was ruled out following an injury to her right ankle that she sustained while fielding in the match against the Netherlands on Wednesday,” read the statement from the ICC.

Although yet to make her international debut, the 24-year-old has earned recognition through strong domestic performances. She impressed in the Women’s Premier League before starring in the Women’s Asia Cup Rising Stars competition, where she claimed eight wickets for India A at an average of 9.62.

In the three matches during the 2025-26 season for RCB, Rawat picked up two wickets at an average of 8 and an economy rate under 6.

Patil’s latest injury comes just months after she returned to international cricket following an earlier layoff. She featured in India’s opening World Cup victory over Pakistan, finishing with figures of 0 for 17 from her three overs.
