It was almost a month ago when Gautam Gambhir was quizzed about Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and why he wasn’t playing for India. That time, it was the T20I series against Afghanistan and India comfortably wrapped up the series heading into the final match.
However, India decided to stick with Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma at that time. Gambhir had a simple message at that time. One he had already conveyed to the 15-year-old.

“From Vaibhav’s point of view, it is again a very clear conversation that he has to wait for his opportunity. We know the kind of talent he has. We know what he can do. But again, someone who done extremely well over a period of years obviously will always be ahead of someone who has got into the team. Whenever he gets that chance, you will get a longer run as well,” said Gambhir.
“And that is what Indian cricket is all about. We want competition, we want that talent in the dressing room. But sometimes that’s how cricket goes. Whether it is a 15-year-old or a 30-year-old, you have to wait for opportunity.”

While Sooryavanshi got his chances during the Asian Games as an opener when Samson was batting at No.3. Sooryavanshi scored 53 runs in two matches during the games, with a strike-rate of 176.66. However, he was once again relegated to the bench for the entirety of the West Indies series.
While fans and pundits may be displeased, Shreyas Iyer believes it is all about patience for the youngster. Speaking after the 5th T20I was washed out, the Indian captain was asked about how he deals with a talent like Sooryavanshi.
Shreyas said that he tells the 15-year-old to remain consistent with his processes and wait for the chance to come to him.
“I just keep telling him you will get the opportunity, if you be consistent about your processes, you have to wait sometimes, we have got two fantastic openers, that’s the conversation we have been having with Vaibhav,” said Shreyas.
The series ended in a 2-2 draw and Shreyas felt that if the team had bowled better then the result would have been different.
“It could have been different considering we would have bowled better in the second and fourth game. Credit where it is due, they batted well. The way (Shai) Hope batted throughout the series,” said Shreyas.
India will now travel to New Zealand for the start of the T20I leg, which will get underway on October 22.
