Sir Idris Elba has “felt like an imposter” as a DJ.

The 53-year-old star – who also uses the moniker DJ Big Driis – has admitted to feeling uncertain of himself at the start of his DJing career.

Idris – who performed at Coachella in 2019 – told Interview magazine: “When I first started DJing in electronic music, I felt like an imposter because I came from hip-hop, reggae, and sound system culture.”

Idris found that his various passions ultimately stem from the same “creative juice”.

He explained: “When I moved to electronic music I found myself going, ‘I’m a bit of an imposter,’ because I’m emulating.

“But it turns out the very same source that makes me choose a big reggae set or hip-hop set is the same source I use for electronic house. Then I realised, ‘It’s the same source I’m using as an actor, the same creative juice.'”

Idris also recalled some of his unusual monikers from the start of his DJing career.

The Hollywood star shared: “My first one, my mom gave to me. I used to DJ for the family house. One turntable and everybody’s dancing. My mom used to say, Idrisco. I was like, ‘That’s not my name.’

“She used to put my shirt collars up and go, ‘Hey, DJ Idrisco.’ My second DJ name was Mr. Kipling.”

Asked to explain the Mr. Kipling name, Idris replied: “It’s a long story. You don’t want to know.”

Earlier this year, meanwhile, Idris insisted he was “not in the race” to play James Bond.

The actor was tipped to replace Daniel Craig as 007 for years, but Idris insisted he was never a serious candidate for the role, after Amazon/MGM Studios announced that the search for the next Bond was underway.

The Luther star – who has also enjoyed huge success as a TV actor – told People: “My name’s not getting thrown out, no way. They’re going younger. And I wish them all the luck of the world. I can’t wait — it’s going to be amazing.”
