Sir Ridley Scott considers himself “an influencer” in the movie business because he’s always “ahead of the game”.
The Alien director has opened up about his continued work in Hollywood and insisted he wants to tell new and interesting stories instead of sticking to a formula which has already proved to be successful.
He told The Times newspaper: ““Look, everything now is about a murdered girl in the woods, or an FBI agent who is better than anyone else – or a superhero. F*** me! There have to be other stories to tell … “
Scott went on to add: “I never want to repeat myself and all my films have been on the money. I’ve been ahead of the game frequently and, if you’re ahead of the game, you’re an influencer. So I’m not a film-maker, I’m an influencer.”
In the interview, Scott also revealed the genre he has yet to touch on – revealing he has yet to make a Western and would love to direct a musical.
When asked about his future plans, he said: “I’ve never done a western. I have cast Hugh Jackman for my Treasure Island adaptation. I want to do a musical and, also, have a marvellous film about the African elephant.”
Jackman is set to play legendary pirate Long John Silver in Scott’s new adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novel, which he will direct from a script by Adolescence writer Jack Thorne.
Treasure Island – which has sold more than 100 million copies and been translated into more than 50 languages since its release in 1983 – follows a young boy, Jim Hawkins, who embarks on a dangerous sea voyage to claim a fortune after uncovering a map to legendary buried treasure, only to get embroiled in a deadly battle of wits with Long John Silver.
Scott previously admitted he would love to hire Owen Cooper – the young actor who starred in Thorne’s hit TV show Adolescence – for the role of Jim Hawkins and he’d also like to get Hugh Grant onboard.
The director told Collider: “Yes, [it’s] with Hugh Jackman. I hope Hugh Grant, and I hope the kid from Adolescence.”
Scott also revealed he had set a start date for Treasure Island and hoped to begin filming in November.
