Can either side break this deadlock before then? Hrustic makes sure it isn’t Egypt this time, even though they come again via that menace Hassan. He whips a cross towards the back post. Trewin deals with it. Egypt take a throw from the left and switch from left to right as Hassan negotiates with two Socceroos before threading the ball through them.
Australia 1-1 Egypt, 90+2 minutes
Trewin ferries the ball down the right and wins a corner. Irvine, stationed at the near post, heads it on for Souttar, who has to duck and thus heads it down. The follow-up requires a save from Shobeir.
Another five minutes of added time.

It’s a fist, really. Attia, that clever ball player, orchestrates an Egypt attack and the red shirts flood Australia’s box in numbers. Hassan, who is causing problems down the right flank, crosses for Hany. It’s blocked, but the follow-up is in a dangerous spot and Beach rushes straight off his line without hesitation to punch the ball away.
Australia 1-1 Egypt, 86 minutes
An Australia free kick bounces left and right, and in and out. When it’s in, Toure contests the ball aerially which ends with heavy contact on an opponent. Souttar then jumps and makes heavy contact on his opponent. I think it’s Rabia? Anyway, Egypt are … irritated, and gesticulate their irritation to a referee unwilling to listen.
Egypt pick up possession and do far less with it.
Australia 1-1 Egypt, 84 minutes
Australia are holding onto the ball, picking out their passes like a metronome, opting to string a few together before making a move. Perhaps looking for those pockets of space Okon snr referred to at half-time.
The ball moves from Herrington, to Behich, to Herrington, then forward to Trewin for a one-two with Hrustic.
Hafez goes down and it’s for real. He needs attention and is swiftly removed and replaced by Trezeguet.
Australia 1-1 Egypt, 80 minutes
We won’t see a Toure-Irankunda combination, though because the first is replacing the second. Well, let’s see what he can bring to the final-ball scenario. Hrustic makes his way on, too, taking over from Volpato.
This match is inching towards extra-time but I can’t help but feel there’s a goal coming. From which team, I have no idea, but the game has opened up.
Australia 1-1 Egypt, 76 minutes
A long ball finds Trewin on the right flank. His first touch is good but he’s muscled out of a second. But then Volpato has the ball and does a very Volpato cross that Irankunda has seen before it’s left his boot, and the winger-now-striker is on the end of it … almost.
Then Hassan bursts free on the counter. He’s quick, and Australia have to scramble to shut him down.

And just like that, Fed Square is no longer a little subdued.
Australia’s equaliser just set off raucous scenes (and a few quickly extinguished flares) in the middle of Melbourne.
Here are a few images of the pandemonium:
