Sourav Ganguly’s security cover has been scaled down from the Z category to the Y category after a review of his threat perception.

The decision was taken following a careful assessment of the security risks faced by the former Indian cricket captain.

The West Bengal government had upgraded Ganguly’s security to the Z category in 2023. Prior to that, the former Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president was entitled to Y-category security provided by the state government.

At the time of the upgrade, sources known to Ganguly had said that no request for enhanced security had been made from his side. However, Nabanna, the administrative headquarters of the West Bengal government, had provided him with Z-category security cover.

With the latest review concluding that a lower level of protection is sufficient, the state government has now downgraded Ganguly’s security from the Z category to the Y category.

Sourav Ganguly (fondly known as “Dada”) is a legendary former cricketer and Indian cricket team captain. Famed for his aggressive leadership and as an elegant off-side batter, he built a fearless, winning team that reached the 2003 World Cup final. He later served as the BCCI President.
