Several political, diplomatic and security developments were reported across South Asia and beyond on Sunday, with Bangladesh, Nepal and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in focus, while China issued its highest typhoon warning, a murder arrest was made in Canada, and Yemen’s Houthis claimed an attack in Saudi Arabia.
The updates included a suggestion from India’s envoy in Dhaka that a meeting between Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and Prime Minister Narendra Modi could ease strains in ties, planned meetings by Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah ‘Balen’ with the Indian and Chinese ambassadors, and a new eight-party alliance in Nepal called the ‘Progressive Front’.

In Dhaka, Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi said a meeting between Rahman and Modi could help resolve problems in bilateral relations between Bangladesh and India.
In Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, the PML(N) of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his brother Nawaz appeared to be on the back foot as it prepared to take charge of the so-called government in the region. The party described the protesters there as “patriots” after months of violence.
In China, the national observatory issued a red alert, the highest level in the country’s typhoon warning system, as Typhoon Dolphin hit Zhejiang province on the eastern coast on Sunday afternoon.
In Nepal, Prime Minister Shah is set to hold separate bilateral meetings on Monday with the Indian and Chinese ambassadors to the country. The meetings will focus on bilateral relations and will be his first one-on-one diplomatic engagements in more than 100 days in office.
Also in Nepal, eight political parties announced the formation of a new alliance, the ‘Progressive Front’, based on “shared political issues and common agendas”.
In Canada, a 32-year-old man was arrested in Toronto for allegedly killing an Indian woman, who was his partner, seven months after her murder, according to a local media report.
A study in China said the Communist Party has long presented the protection of women’s rights as one of its achievements, but found that women’s role in public life has reduced in recent years, especially at the highest levels of political and policy leadership.
In Yemen, the Houthis said they had attacked an Aramco oil facility in south-western Saudi Arabia on Sunday, in what they described as their latest attack on the kingdom.
Taken together, the developments pointed to a day shaped by diplomatic contacts, political shifts, extreme weather and security-related incidents across the region and beyond.
