Australia’s oldest woman has died aged 112.
South Australian Lorna Henstridge marked her 112th birthday in June, but on Monday her daughter confirmed her death to The Adelaide Advertiser.
Ms Henstridge lived independently until the age of 105, and leaves nine great-grandchildren.
Ms Henstridge was born in Adelaide on June 6, 1914, the month before WWI officially began.
She then grew up on a farm at Bute, about 130km north of Adelaide.
She and her husband Alan then settled in the town of Keith, 200km southeast of the capital.
Ms Henstridge was only eight months younger than Australia’s oldest living person – Ken Weeks, who lives in Grafton on the NSW north coast.
Mr Weeks is the oldest Australian on record.
She has also lived through two global pandemics and 26 Australian Prime Ministers.
In 2024, Ms Henstridge spoke about her longevity and the importance of “moving all the time” both physically and “in your thoughts”.
“You can’t led old-fashioned ideas take over your life,” she said.
“You’ve got to live today, by today’s standards. And keep going with it, and be happy with it.
“And you’ll find most people are very happy to come and help you get there.”
Her family have confirmed she was ill with pneumonia in her final weeks.
