A man has been charged with murder after the body of a 28-year-old woman was found in a home in Perth’s south-east.
Detectives from the Homicide Squad charged the 38-year-old man after being called to a home on Taree Street in St James on Wednesday evening at about 8.30pm.
Police allege the woman died from injuries inflicted in the days prior to being found and will also allege the offending occurred in the context of a family and domestic relationship.
Paramedics were initially called to the home following reports of an unresponsive woman, with St John Ambulance alerting police.
She was taken to Royal Perth Hospital by ambulance, where she was pronounced dead.
The man will appear before the Perth Magistrates Court on Friday.
It’s understood there were three children living in the home, who are now in the care of the late mum’s twin sister.
Homicide detectives and forensic police were seen coming and going from the front-unit property throughout Thursday. A grey car was parked in the driveway.
WA Premier Roger Cook said it was his understanding that children were present at the home on Wednesday night.
“It sounds like a horrific situation and one that took place in the presence of children,” he said.
“Our thoughts go out to everyone impacted.”
Nearby resident Hassan Mahmoud was leaving for night shift work as a nurse when he noticed emergency vehicles on Wednesday night.
“I thought maybe like it’s the usual stuff because in this area like I have seen many suspicious people,” he said.
“There’s always something going on, so even in our house we had like six break-ins.”
He said it was unsettling to learn someone had died at the home.
“It’s shocking because I know that this area is not safe,” he said.
Housemates residing in a home a few doors away from the crime scene said they didn’t hear anything, and had only saw police cars when they went outside to collect an Uber Eats order.
“We were watching a movie around 10 o’clock and when I came out, I saw police lights,” one said.
“I just had a sneak peek. . . I just took my food, went back in. We were watching a movie, so it was very loud.”
