Sticks, slippers, buckets fly as Northeast students, locals clash at Andhra college

A dispute over an missing mobile phone escalated into a confrontation between Northeast and local students at a nursing college in Andhra Pradesh’s Kakinada, prompting senior officials to intervene and relocate students to separate accommodation.

The incident took place at SK College of Nursing in Kakinada after a mobile phone belonging to a Northeast student was reportedly found missing on August 21. The dispute over the phone allegedly escalated into a confrontation between students from the Northeast, including Manipur, and Telugu-speaking students.

The situation was brought under control after the District Collector and Superintendent of Police intervened and directed officials to address the tension at the hostel.

STUDENTS RELOCATED AFTER TENSION

Following protests by both groups, students from the Northeast were provided separate accommodation.

As a precautionary measure, 31 students from other states were also shifted to a separate hostel with their consent to prevent any further escalation.

The district administration and police also made arrangements to ensure the students’ safety.

According to the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister’s Office, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu reviewed the incident and directed senior officials to resolve the matter immediately.

Acting on his instructions, the District Collector and SP ensured the students’ safety, arranged accommodation and took steps to prevent further escalation.

The issue was subsequently resolved, the CMO said.

MANIPUR STUDENTS THANK OFFICIALS

Students from Manipur thanked the authorities for their intervention and the arrangements made for their safety.

In a message after being shifted, the students said they were safe and appreciated the administration for providing separate accommodation and ensuring their security.

The development also drew the attention of former Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh, who said he had contacted the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister’s Office regarding the incident.

“I have been informed that the students have been moved to a different building and that a lady Sub-Inspector is being stationed with them for the night,” Singh said in a post on X.

He thanked Naidu for his “kind and timely intervention”, saying the prompt response to ensure the students’ safety and well-being was appreciated.

DISPUTE OVER MISSING PHONE TRIGGERS TENSION

The dispute reportedly began after a mobile phone belonging to a Northeast student went missing on August 21.

The disagreement allegedly escalated between the two groups, creating tension inside the hostel.

Some Northeast students were reportedly injured during the confrontation, with visuals showing students with apparent injuries. The students also reportedly sought shelter inside the hostel amid the tension.

After the matter reached the district administration and police, senior officials intervened and directed local authorities to visit the hostel and address the situation.

The administration subsequently separated the groups as a precautionary measure.

SITUATION NOW UNDER CONTROL

Officials said the situation is now under control and that the students have expressed satisfaction with the response of the district administration and police.

The CMO said the matter had been resolved amicably, with students from the northeastern states expressing satisfaction with the authorities’ response.

The immediate focus remains on ensuring the safety of the students and preventing any further escalation at the college hostel.
