About the film

Directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, the film also stars Shabana Azmi, Ali Fazal and Abhimanyu Singh.

Set during one of the most turbulent periods in the subcontinent’s history, the film follows a family whose lives are torn apart by violence, displacement and the upheaval of Partition. The trailer focusses on the human cost of the tragedy while highlighting compassion, resilience and hope amid widespread conflict.

The trailer opens with Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta, who play a married couple, celebrating India’s Independence before their lives are disrupted by Partition. As violence erupts around them, Sunny Deol’s character fights to keep his family safe.

Once across the border, the family is allotted a haveli that still houses Shabana Azmi’s character, an elderly Hindu woman who refuses to leave her home. As communal tensions rise, Sunny Deol’s character takes it upon himself to protect her and stands against religious hatred. In one of the trailer’s key moments, he says that destroying a temple is not Islam, and adds that a child’s first religion is their mother and that a mother should not be divided into Hindu or Muslim.

The trailer also offers a glimpse of Karan Deol as Sunny Deol’s on-screen son, warning their enemies that his father will stop at nothing to protect his family. Batwara 1947 marks the reunion of Rajkumar Santoshi and Sunny Deol nearly three decades after they last worked together. The film’s music has been composed by AR Rahman, with lyrics by Javed Akhtar.

Produced by Aamir Khan and Aparna Purohit under the banner of Aamir Khan Productions, Batwara 1947 is scheduled to release in cinemas worldwide on August 14, coinciding with Partition Day.
