Sydney Sweeney has been cast in Lindsey Anderson Beer’s reimagining of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.
The Euphoria actress has landed her next big role as Beer – known for her work as writer and director for 2023’s Pet Sematary: Bloodlines – has secured a big screen adaptation of her debut novel Hollow.
As reported by Deadline, the filmmaker has sold the novel to Penguin Random House imprint Putnam, and now the novel is set to become a feature film.
Beer will direct and adapt the script, and produce through her Lab Brew banner alongside LuckyChap.
The novel, and the film, is a bold reimagining of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow from the perspective of Katrina Van Tassel, who will be played by Sweeney.
The character is portrayed as a central figure in a supernatural love triangle and a dangerous mystery, rather than simply a romantic prise.
The story will combine gothic atmosphere, erotic thriller, and psychological elements.
The novel, which is being fast-tracked, is expected to be published in late 2027, which would be in line with development of the big screen adaptation.
Meanwhile, the movie will serve as Sweeney’s new Honey Trap Banner’s first official film.
The production company was unveiled this week, as Deadline reported she was forming the studio with longtime creative collaborator Kaylee McGregor on board as president of production and development.
It’s said the company has a first-look deal with Sony Pictures.
Sweeney was most recently seen in the third and final season of Euphoria, in which her character Cassie becomes a model on OnlyFans.
The HBO show’s creator Sam Levinson has admitted he toyed with the idea of scrapping the nudity in one particular montage sequence which showed her in various states of undress, but the actress dismissed the plan.
He told the New York Times’ Popcast: “Well, it’s funny. When I first wrote it, I thought, “Well, maybe we shoot all of this and we don’t have any nudity.
“I was talking to her, and you know, [I said]: ‘Maybe there’s ways to shoot around certain things?’ She looked at me, and she was like: ‘Are you kidding? It’s like, I’m playing an OnlyFans model. You’re telling me you’re going to, like, skirt around it?’
“And I was like: ‘Yeah, OK, it’s a fair point’. So there’s always a discussion of what works best for the character.”
Levinson went on to praise Sydney as a “totally fearless actor” adding that she was “wonderfully professional” and showed up “game every day”.
He added: “I adore working with her, because there’s such a flexibility in terms of the performance.”
Speaking about the OnlyFans scenes – which have shown Sweeney’s character dressed as a baby, wearing a leash like a dog and posing in a nude bodysuit with a python wrapped around her – he said: “We’re tackling this world of OnlyFans where women are being paid to, like, whisper into an ear-shaped microphone and lick it. There is a level of absurdity to it that is just fun.”
