The Crime Branch CID (CB-CID) of Tamil Nadu police has registered a case over the circulation of an AI-generated deepfake video impersonating the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay.
During regular cyber patrolling, the CB-CID Cyber Crime team came across an AI-generated deepfake video with Hindi audio that impersonated the Chief Minister on Facebook. The video was created and circulated on Facebook and other social media platforms with an intention to cheat innocent people. It asked members of the public seeking financial help to contact a WhatsApp number.

The Cyber Crime team furnished a special report on September 1, 2026, seeking action against the suspicious scam video. Based on the report, the Cyber Crime Cell of CB-CID registered a case on September 1 and took up the matter for investigation.
The CB-CID immediately approached Meta, seeking information related to the fake ID and logs. It also initiated a request to take down the fake video.
The preliminary investigation revealed that several similar AI-generated deepfake videos portraying the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister offering help are being circulated not only on Facebook but also on other social media platforms. The investigation also found that many of these videos were shared on purportedly Pakistan-based Facebook IDs.
The investigation is in progress to identify the perpetrators and ensure that the false content is removed from social media platforms at the earliest.
The Tamil Nadu Police has urged the public not to respond to phone numbers or join WhatsApp groups circulated or shared through such fake videos. It said the videos are not genuine and are deepfake videos fabricated by scammers to cheat people. The police also urged people to educate their family members and relatives about such online scams.
