Only Taylor Swift could overshadow both the World Cup and the 250th anniversary of America’s independence.
The singer and cultural juggernaut was the talk of the town in New York City on Thursday night (Friday, AEST), as she and NFL star Travis Kelce reportedly kicked off their wedding festivities with a rehearsal dinner at the iconic Madison Square Garden.
Some are calling it pop’s “royal wedding”. That’s following Dua Lipa and Callum Turner’s so-called royal festivities, and Tom Holland and Zendaya’s less splashy but equally “royal” nuptials (a term that is being sprinkled about far too liberally).
Royal or not, this wedding is already generating as much buzz as everything else Swift does. Photos of a grey SUV thought to be carrying the pop star to the venue on Thursday sent fans into overdrive. So too did footage of friends Lena Dunham and Selena Gomez, as they supposedly made their own way to the “wedding of weddings”.
Eyes have also been on those who may not be attending the extravaganza, namely Blake Lively, one of Swift’s long-time friends with whom she’s rumoured to have had a falling out since the actress’s It Ends With Us legal battle. TMZ reported Lively was spotted cheering on her daughter alongside husband Ryan Reynolds in upstate New York on Thursday – hundreds of kilometres away from the rumoured rehearsal dinner.
A report has also emerged that Swift and Kelce are already married. According to Page Six, unnamed sources said the couple exchanged vows in front of a “tiny group of loved ones”. Though the outlet noted that Swift’s private jet recently spent time in Nashville, it did not specifically state when or where the wedding took place.
Rumours and grainy paparazzi shots abound. But, ahead of the proposed “big wedding celebration” on Friday (Saturday AEST), what do we really know, what are we fairly certain about, and what is simply wishful thinking?
What we know
Swift and Kelce are getting married. Of that, we’re 100 per cent certain.
After two years of dating, the pair shared photos of their engagement in August 2025, confirming it truly was a love story, and Swift did, in fact, say yes. Since then, the couple have kept quiet on wedding details (the same can’t be said of Swift’s big fat diamond, which she’s flashed at every opportunity).
What we suspect
We’re stabbing in the dark, but that hasn’t stopped speculation, some of which has caught serious traction over the past week.
Firstly, the date. Forget Swift’s lucky number 13 because it appears she will say “I do” on July 3 (US time). Why? Well, it’s the day before US Independence Day, one of Swift’s all-time favourite holidays. And, though this could never be proved, there’s surely some kind of power trip in snatching attention from your country’s 250th birthday, as well as one of the biggest sporting events in the world.
As for where, all signs point to Madison Square Garden in New York City. A windowless sports arena for the Shakespeare of pop’s wedding? The horror!
According to CNN, a permit was recently requested to hold an “event” near Madison Square Garden by a company known to plan weddings. Additionally, Kelce’s fellow Kansas City Chiefs players reportedly have reservations at hotels near the venue around that date.
Even New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani weighed in, teasing reporters at a press conference this week about the city’s upcoming extreme heat that “if you happen to be getting married at Madison Square Garden, you will be staying inside and you will be staying cool”.
The Associated Press appears to have obtained the closest thing to confirmation so far, citing a law enforcement official briefed on the security plans who said their wedding would be taking place at Madison Square Garden this weekend.
Other reports note two permits – one for 1000 people on July 3 (US time), and another for 100 people on July 2. If true, this suggests two celebrations at Madison Square Garden – perhaps one for a smaller rehearsal dinner before the big bash (which seemed all but certain as celebrities made their way to the arena on Thursday night), or for a more intimate wedding (if 100 guests can be called intimate) before the reception to end all wedding receptions.
The larger celebration will include a cocktail party starting in the late afternoon, according to CNN, and it’s expected to continue through to 4am. Reporters at TMZ even believe the couple have planned for a giant castle to be built inside the arena, transforming the sterile sports space into a Folklore-esque fairytale. This rumour, however, has since been heavily tested, with some insiders telling People magazine that, though the arena has been “transformed”, no castle was erected.
With such a huge to-do, security is paramount. So, according to The Hollywood Reporter, they’ve called in the FBI to keep them safe. And as strange as Madison Square Garden may seem for a die-hard romantic’s wedding, it’s incredibly fortified. It has no exterior windows and highly secure infrastructure.
The guest list
The wedding of a mega-famous pop star and a Super Bowl champion is bound to attract a smorgasbord of celebrity friends. Rumoured to be attending are the Haim sisters, Zoë Kravitz (but not her fiancé Harry Styles, whom Swift used to date), Ed Sheeran, Karlie Kloss, Suki Waterhouse, Sombr, Gigi Hadid and long-time bestie Selena Gomez. The latter two are also rumoured to be bridesmaids.
Emma Stone, Sabrina Carpenter, Gracie Abrams, Paul McCartney and Kenny Chesney are also expected to attend.
It’s all but certain Stevie Nicks will be there. She and Swift have sung together before, Nicks wrote the introductory poem for The Tortured Poets Department, and Swift wore a shirt emblazoned with “Stevie Knicks” to the NBA finals last month. We all know Swift loves an Easter egg. Will Nicks sing, or could she even officiate? After all, she’s done it before.
Each of these guests (along with the many, many staff and crew members) supposedly had to sign ironclad NDAs. In fact, some outlets report that they were asked to reserve two days for the festivities, but were given no further details. Very James Bond.
Some wild guesses
Now for the total shots in the dark. Some believe Swift and Kelce are already married, with the MSG hoopla operating as an intricate ruse to distract us from their actual, more private nuptials.
You can’t put this past Swift, who’s known as the mastermind of misdirection. Remember when she tricked us into thinking she “didn’t have a lot going on” in 2020 shortly before dropping Folklore? Writing a throwaway line on Instagram versus requesting permits to block out city streets aren’t really comparable, but extreme measures would have to be taken to cover up an extreme event.
Even if they’re already married, an MSG bash remains on the cards. And where there’s a Swift party, there’s singing. Nicks and Tim McGraw, who inspired Swift’s debut single, are set to perform (as is McCartney according to some rumours), and just try keeping Sheeran away from the microphone. As for Swift, it’s difficult to envision her declining the opportunity to sing Paper Rings, Lover or Mary’s Song in her actual wedding gown.
Speaking of the gown (or gowns is probably more accurate for the woman who changed every few minutes during the Eras Tour), The Hollywood Reporter says the main dress will probably be a custom couture gown by Jonathan Anderson of Christian Dior. But an Australian designer could sneak in, perhaps at least for one of her looks. Take Toni Maticevski, who designed the gown Swift wore in the video for Fortnight, or Zimmermann, one of Swift’s favourites.
As a self-described “English teacher”, Swift will surely write her own vows, tapping on the same lyrical genius as her music. Never one to shy away, Kelce could stand up to the challenge and do the same. Or perhaps he’ll just quote a bunch of lines from Barbie, seeing as we know how much he loves Greta Gerwig’s films.
But will we ever get to hear these vows? Given this is a woman known for documenting everything – just look at her recent The End of an Era documentary – no one would be surprised if we were all blessed with a three-part wedding film in the coming months.
Finally, the cats. Everyone knows how much Swift loves her feline friends. Meredith Grey, Olivia Benson and Benjamin Button have featured in music videos, merchandise and even on the cover of Time magazine alongside the singer. Could her furry pals strut down the aisle with a little ring pouch attached to their collars? If nothing else, let this be true.
