The Taylor Swift-at-the-Emmys mystery has finally been solved. The singer did make an appearance at the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards, but not quite in the way fans might have imagined. Taylor did not walk the red carpet or turn up at the ceremony in person. Instead, she appeared in a pre-taped sketch that aired during the awards show.

And the sketch had a rather fun way of addressing the question everyone had been asking: would Taylor Swift actually attend the Emmys?

The bit featured Mariska Hargitay reprising her Law & Order: Special Victims Unit character Olivia Benson. In the sketch, Benson led an investigation into Taylor’s possible Emmy appearance, complete with an investigation board tracking the clues. The joke ultimately confirmed what fans had been waiting to know – Taylor was part of the Emmys, just not from inside the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.

Taylor had another big event to attend

Taylor actually had two major events on her calendar on September 14. One was the Emmys in Los Angeles. The other was the Kansas City Chiefs’ home opener at Arrowhead Stadium. In the end, she chose the latter.

Taylor was seen at the Chiefs’ game against the Denver Broncos, watching from a suite. She was also seen chatting with actor Tom Cruise during the game, putting to rest any hope of a last-minute appearance at the Emmys.

Her decision came just nine days after her concert special missed out on all five of its nominations at the Creative Arts Emmys.

Taylor’s Eras Tour special went home empty-handed

Taylor Swift The Eras Tour The Final Show had received five nominations at the Creative Arts Emmys, including Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-Recorded). The awards for those categories were handed out on September 5, but the Disney+ production did not win any of them.

The special captured the final performance of Taylor’s mammoth Eras Tour at BC Place in Vancouver, Canada, on December 8, 2024.

The Final Show lost the Outstanding Variety Special award to The Muppet Show. Taylor was recognised in the category as both a producer and performer. The special also missed out in its other four categories.

The Muppet Show won for Outstanding Picture Editing for Variety Programming, while The Apple Music Super Bowl LX Halftime Show Starring Bad Bunny took home awards for directing, sound mixing, and technical direction and camerawork.

Taylor already has an Emmy

Despite the latest snub, Taylor is no stranger to the Television Academy. The singer has previously been nominated for an Emmy and already has one trophy to her name.

And The Final Show was hardly a small production. It documented the 149th and final concert of the Eras Tour, which ran for almost two years across five continents.

The tour drew more than 10 million fans and brought in $2.077 billion in ticket sales, making it the highest-grossing concert tour in history. The show itself ran for more than three hours and became a global pop-culture phenomenon.
