A techie built an AI-powered job application tool to help his wife navigate a frustrating job search that had lasted nearly 10 months. After she landed a job using the app, he decided to make the project available to others by open-sourcing it.
Sharing the story on Reddit, the developer posted on the r/SoftwareEngineerJobs subreddit with the title, “My wife was struggling with her job search, so I built her an app. She landed a job with it, so I open-sourced it”.

He explained that his wife, a junior software engineer, had been finding it difficult to land a job for almost 10 months. A major part of the process involved tailoring her resume to match different job descriptions across multiple portals, which was taking up considerable time.
“I got tired of watching her spend hours tweaking the same resume for every application,” he wrote, explaining why he decided to build a tool to simplify the process.
The app, called Dossier, brought several parts of the job application process together. It searched job listings through services such as JSearch, which sourced postings from platforms including LinkedIn and Indeed, as well as Adzuna and Germany’s Arbeitsagentur. Users could also paste a job description directly into the app.
Based on the information in a user’s profile, Dossier generated tailored resumes, cover letters and application emails. The developer said the tool used only facts provided in the profile, rather than making up experience or qualifications. Users could then refine the drafts through a chat interface, download them as PDFs and choose from 12 resume themes.
It also included a dashboard and application-tracking board that allowed users to follow each application from the draft stage through to an offer.
The developer said the app could run on a user’s own server, with the option of using a local AI model through Ollama or connecting to services such as Anthropic and OpenAI. This meant users could keep their data under their own control.
He decided to open-source Dossier after his wife successfully used it to land a job, hoping others navigating a similar search could benefit from it.

The post received an encouraging response from fellow Reddit users. Several congratulated the developer and his wife, while one person praised the app but raised questions about whether pulling job listings directly from platforms such as Adzuna and Arbeitsagentur could create legal or other complications.
Another commenter wanted to know more about the wife’s experience using Dossier, including how long it took her to secure an offer, what kind of role she eventually landed and whether it matched her expectations.
