Teenage defender James Overy is eyeing Socceroos selection after making the move from Manchester United to Sydney FC.
Overy, 18, has signed a three-season deal with the Sky Blues after spending the past two years in Manchester United’s academy system.
The former Perth Glory right-back was part of the Socceroos squad last November for games against Colombia and Venezuela but didn’t get any game time.
“Being involved with the Socceroos has given me a taste of where I want to get to,” Overy said
“Playing regularly for Sydney FC is a huge opportunity for me to keep developing and hopefully earn more opportunities with the national team.
“I want to come in, work hard, compete for a place in the team and show what I can do.
“Sydney FC is a massive club with a history of winning trophies and developing young Australian players, so I’m really excited to be joining.”
The Australian under-23 international could make his Sky Blues debut on Wednesday night when the Sydneysiders host Melbourne Victory in an Australia Cup semi-final at Jubilee Stadium.
Sky Blues coach Patrick Kisnorbo said Overy was “quick, aggressive, (and) technically very good”.
“He loves to get forward from right-back, but he also has the mentality and competitiveness you want from a young defender,” Kisnorbo said.
“He has spent two important years developing in an elite environment at Manchester United and now he needs regular senior football to take the next step in his career.
“He has already been around the Socceroos at only 18, which demonstrates how highly regarded he is and what a good character he is as well.”
Overy said he had an “unbelievable experience” at Manchester United after joining the club in 2024.
“You just learn heaps of things tactically, technically, physically off those players,” he said.
“Every day you just soak it in, and I can’t wait to bring it to Sydney FC and show these boys what I can do.”
