Hyderabad: The Telangana Human Rights Commission (TGHRC) has directed the state government to improve the infrastructure of its schools across the state.
Taking suo motu cognizance of a media report in July flagging lack of basic amenities such as toilets and an adequate number of classrooms in government schools, the Commission, headed by Dr. Justice Shameem Akther, passed the order.
Acting on the directions, reports gathered from authorities revealed that several schools in Adilabad, Jangaon, Nalgonda, and Suryapet districts indeed lack infrastructure, according to the Deccan Chronicle.
Most common issues were classrooms in poor condition and a shortage of toilets, it said. A school in Nalgonda even had students sitting under a tree as the tin roof of the classrooms was being repaired.
‘Shortcomings affect safety, health, dignity of students’
Observing that such deficiencies affect the safety, health, and dignity of students, the Commission said that the Right to Education includes these for children to continue their education.
The Commission recommended that the School Education Department Principal Secretary collate reports from all District Educational Officers on infrastructure and basic amenities in government schools and pursue the matter with the Chief Secretary. This, the Commission said, must be complied with and reported back within six months.
It said that prompt action was required in providing children with safe rooms and working toilets.
