Preparing for the UPSC Civil Services Examination is often viewed as a test of knowledge, but IAS officer Pari Bishnoi believes mental strength and self-belief are equally important to succeed.

Bishnoi, who secured All India Rank 30 in the UPSC Civil Services Examination, recently shared advice for aspirants preparing for one of India’s toughest competitive examinations. She is currently serving as an Additional District Magistrate in Sikkim.

Her message, shared in a video on Instagram by photographer Ankit Kumar, focused on dealing with the pressure and competition surrounding UPSC preparation.

COMPETITION IS MORE IN OUR HEADS

Speaking about her own preparation journey, Bishnoi said she too had doubts when she began preparing for the civil services examination.

She recalled seeing several talented students around her and wondering whether she would be able to succeed. However, despite coming from an ordinary school and college background, she continued to believe in herself and her preparation.

According to Bishnoi, aspirants often make the competition seem much bigger in their minds than it actually is.

“The competition is more in our head… the real competition is actually very, very less. People who are actually preparing are very few. We sometimes get troubled by the pressure around us.”

FOCUS ON YOUR OWN PREPARATION

The IAS officer encouraged aspirants to avoid constantly comparing their preparation with that of others. Instead, she advised candidates to concentrate on their own progress and remain consistent with their efforts.

She also emphasised that sincere preparation can help candidates overcome the fear surrounding the examination.

Bishnoi described the civil services examination as more than simply a test of academic knowledge. She added that UPSC preparation also tests an aspirant’s mental strength and belief in themselves.

Her comments highlight an often-overlooked aspect of civil services preparation: while knowledge and strategy are essential, maintaining confidence and managing the psychological pressure of the examination can also play a crucial role.
