Olivia Wilde thinks “difficult conversations” keep relationships alive.

The actress – who was married to filmmaker Tao Ruspoli, 50, from 2003 until 2011, and went on to have romances with Ted Lasso’s Jason Sudeikis, 50, from 2011 until 2020, and singer Harry Styles, 32, from 2021 until 2022 – says openness and honesty can help couples overcome challenges.

Those themes are central to Olivia’s new movie, The Invite, which sees her and Seth Rogan, 44, play a struggling married couple Angela and Joe, who are forced to face their problems when they invite a free-spirited set of neighbours, Pina (Penelope Cruz) and Hawk (Edward Norton) for dinner.

Olivia, 42, told People: “Relationships are hard. It’s impossible to… It’s not impossible, but it feels impossible, I think, at times, to sustain a relationship with one person for a very long time if you don’t have these difficult conversations that the movie is really about.”

Earlier this month, the filmmaker shared she knew her and Jason’s romance was over following a birthday party.

Olivia said on a recent episode of 31-year-old Alex Cooper’s Call Her Daddy podcast: “I remember the date because it was my birthday. But it was March 2020, March 10. Jason and I had been having a rough time there for a while. Like, we had a really bumpy, bumpy ride.”

The Tron: Legacy alum – who got engaged to Jason in 2013 – recalled driving home with the We’re the Millers actor when she accepted that their relationship was no more.

Olivia added: “I said, ‘Did you get me a birthday present?’ And he said, ‘What would I get you, Olivia? I don’t know you.’ And he wasn’t wrong. We don’t know each other anymore.

“It was f****** tough. And it brought us to a place of like, OK, this is done. We’re going to end this.”

Olivia – who has Otis, 12, and Daisy, nine, with Jason – found it tough to go through such a public break-up.

She said: “I remember, it was Thanksgiving and we were separated, and I was with the kids because it was my time to be with the kids.

“Everything was as it should be. Kids were with me. Jason was photographed with his girlfriend on the beach in Costa Rica, and the press were like, ‘Yay for him, he looks so happy. So wonderful.'”
