Flu cases have surged by more than a quarter, with infections continuing to climb in spring.
A total of 31,650 influenza cases were recorded nationally in the two weeks to September 6, up 27.2 per cent from the previous fortnight.
National cases have now reached 130,355 for the year to date, although that figure remains 62.6 per cent below the tally recorded at the same point in 2025.
NSW has recorded the highest number of infections so far this year with 65,615 cases, followed by Queensland with 24,574 and Victoria with 21,723.
The Australian Centre for Disease Control (CDC) said the uptick aligned with pre-pandemic patterns when infections typically began rising in June and peaked about late August or early September.
However, this year’s sustained increase didn’t take hold until late July.
The CDC warned the national peak might not yet have passed, even as the rate of increase slowed.
Officials cited several drivers behind the delayed surge, including waning immunity, post-school holiday social mixing, and mid-July cold snaps driving people indoors.
Influenza A made up 30,074 of the cases recorded in the latest reporting period, while Covid-19 cases fell 12.2 per cent to 4178 and RSV dropped 19.5 per cent to 7075.
