Do you have a daily ritual? I read with interest this week about Lessons in Chemistry author Bonnie Garmus’s commitment to reading a poem each day. Remembering this suggestion from her high school English teacher as a way to “keep your brain fresh … [and] your ideas open”, Garmus has maintained this practice since 2009 and says the benefits are myriad. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed at the idea of introducing something more into an already busy day but, crucially for the time-poor, carving out time to read a poem is, as Garmus notes, quite achievable. Her daily habit is a reminder that small acts can have a disproportionately big impact – whether it be on our physical, spiritual or cognitive wellbeing. – Melissa Stevens, editor
