Most of us can remember a moment where we have said or done something which we wish we could undo. The kind of moment which leaves you kicking the bedsheets at night every time you think of it. It might be a comment that was taken the wrong way, a remark that showed our ignorance about something or someone, or a joke that didn’t land the way we envisaged. While most of us go through this experience in relative anonymity, it is a different story for public figures. For comedian and cabaret star Reuben Kaye, this moment came in 2023 after he delivered a now-infamous joke on live TV. The reaction to the joke resulted in a sustained pile-on for months which included threats of violence, the loss of work and concerns for his family’s safety. In our lead story, Kaye talks about what it was like to be in the eye of such a storm. Was he able to weather it with greater resilience than others might due to the experiences of his childhood? It’s a revealing read. – Melissa Stevens, editor
