Temperatures 8 degrees above average are forecast for the weekend in Brisbane, with hot and dry conditions expected throughout the rest of south-east Queensland.
Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist Angus Hines said temperatures would begin to climb on Wednesday, with mercury expected to breach 30 on Thursday and potentially reach 33 degrees, staying within a few degrees of that maximum over the weekend.
“Those temperatures are really going to spike,” he said.
Hines said the average September high in Brisbane was between 25 and 26 degrees, meaning Friday could be eight degrees above average.
“Seeing 33 degrees is certainly an unusual spike in heat, and really rubber-stamping the change in season,” he said.
The hottest September day in Queensland last year was 34 degrees, recorded in Gatton, 75 kilometres west of Brisbane, where it is expected to reach the same temperature on Friday and Saturday.
The heat would be dry, and blow in from the desert, Hines said.
“It doesn’t pack a crazy punch in terms of humidity, so we’re not expecting it to be super sodden and muggy when it does get hot this week – we can save those conditions for a little bit later on.”
He said there could be rain south of the border in northern NSW, but the Gold Coast was also likely to be sunny and warm.
Hines predicted the weather would stay dry at the beginning of next week, with a significant change in the weather pattern needed to bring rain.
