On May 31, Asad, the main accused in the murder of 17-year-old Surya Pratap Chauhan in Ghaziabad, was killed in a police encounter. Three more people, including his father, have been arrested for their alleged role in the crime.
A black-and-white video of a group of men hacking and stabbing another person in a public place is going viral on social media, with many claiming it shows the murder of Surya Pratap Chauhan in Ghaziabad.

Sharing the video, an X user wrote, “This is the real Bhaichara of Jihadists. Every Single Jihadist Involved in the stabbing and killing of Hindu Surya Chauhan should be encountered. Their houses should be bulldozed & families should also be booked.” People commenting on the post also claimed that the clip showed the Ghaziabad murder, which occurred on Eid, on May 28.
India Today Fact Check found that the video has no connection to the Ghaziabad case. It shows the murder of a 20-year-old man at Chandigarh’s Daria Industrial Area market on May 12.
OUR PROBE
Reverse-searching frames from the video led us to its coloured version shared by Aam Aadmi Party leader Anurag Dhanda on X on May 14. Dhanda stated that the video was from Chandigarh.
We then conducted a keyword search and came across a May 13 report published by News 18 featuring screenshots from the video. According to the report, a man called Suraj was stabbed by four or five assailants on 18ft Road in Chandigarh on the evening of May 12. Reportedly, the motive behind the attack was an old rivalry.
Suraj’s father, Mukesh, and mother, Rajbala, alleged that after the attack, their son lay blood-soaked on the road for nearly 25 minutes, but nobody came to his rescue.
The Times of India on May 13 and The Indian Express on May 14 reported that Suraj was hacked to death at the Daria Industrial Area market in Chandigarh. These reports said that three or four armed assailants attacked him. The Indian Express reported that the police said assailants repeatedly attacked the victim with sharp-edged weapons, which caused excessive bleeding. The attackers then fled the scene, leaving him critically injured on the road.
The Tribune reported on May 18 that the Chandigarh Police had arrested several people in the Suraj murder case, which included one adult, identified as Rahul from Mohal, and four minors.
Talking to India Today Fact Check, Jaspal Singh, the SHO of the Industrial Area police station in Chandigarh, confirmed that none of the accused in the Suraj murder case was Muslims, and the reason behind the murder was an old rivalry.
Thus, we concluded that the video does not show the murder of Surya Pratap Chauhan in Ghaziabad.
