Two would-be thieves have inadvertently led police to a “treasure trove” of drugs and cash, with three people charges following the find.

Caught on CCTV wearing grey hooded jumpers, high-vis vests, masks and sunglasses, the man and woman are believed to left empty-handed after attempting to break into a storage unit in Port Melbourne on the morning of May 27.

Detectives probing the attempted break-in would go onto discover a significant quantity of drugs.

“While investigating the alleged attempt, officers from the Prahran Divisional Response Unit located a treasure trove of drugs which led to subsequent searches at apartments in Port Melbourne and St Kilda,” A Victoria Police spokeswoman said on Saturday.

Among the items seized, police say they found 12L of 1,4-Butanediol, 1kg of methamphetamine, half a kilogram of MDMA, weapons and more than $460,000 in cash.

Investigators released CCTV videos of the man and woman, seeking public help identifying the pair.

They are believed to be caucasian and aged in this 30s.

According to Victoria Police, three people have been charged with offences related to the seizure.

They are a 44-year-old St Kilda man charged with offences including drug trafficking, a 32-year-old St Kilda woman charged with possessing a prohibited weapon, and a 44-year-old man alleged to be the “ringleader”.

The alleged ringleader was arrested on June 3 at Melbourne Airport after returning to the country and charged with offences including drug trafficking.

Both the men are expected to appear in court in August and the woman was bailed to appear in court in November.
