A protest over an alleged extramarital relationship turned violent in West Bengal’s West Burdwan district on Wednesday, with a mob vandalising the residence of Trinamool Congress (TMC) Zilla Parishad Bishwanath Bauri in the Raniganj rural area.
According to local residents and eyewitnesses, the unrest was triggered by allegations that Bauri’s son, Pavitra Bauri, was involved in a relationship with a married woman from the neighbourhood. As the allegations spread, a large number of villagers gathered outside the family’s residence in Ratibati and staged a protest.

The crowd allegedly threw stones at the house, damaging the main gate, steel grills and window panes. Parts of the property were also vandalised during the protest.
The protesters demanded that if Pavitra Bauri and the woman were indeed in a relationship, he should publicly accept her and marry her.
A woman relative, identified as Basanti, told the media that the family had been aware of the relationship for a long time but was now seeking “social justice” after the matter came into the open.
She said the family did not want any confrontation and only wanted Pavitra Bauri to appear before them so that the issue could be resolved. Basanti also said they had always respected Bishwanath Bauri and had never been intimidated by him.
Local sources claimed that as the situation escalated, Bishwanath Bauri and his family left the house.
Police initially reached the spot but reportedly struggled to control the agitated crowd. Additional police personnel were later deployed to bring the situation under control.
A heavy police presence remains in the area, and authorities are closely monitoring the situation. Police have launched an investigation into the incident.
