Tommy Lee Jones has no plans to retire from acting.
The 80-year-old star, who made his first red carpet appearance in three years just days ago, has admitted while he’s given some thought to the future, he wants to keep working.
Asked if he’s considering retirement, he told E! News: “Yes, I have. I’m not gonna do it.”
Jones is currently starring in the second season of FX series The Lowdown, in which he plays the estranged father of Ethen Hawke’s character.
He described the project as “very inviting” and the set was “a happy place to be”.
He added: “I would have been happy to play any part in that world. What was most appealing was just what it was.”
The series marks his first TV show role since 1989’s Lonesdome Dove, which was partly inspired by the relationship between his and Hawke’s characters.
Hawke said: “We’re estranged from each other. We have a long past. Some of it is rich with love and good things, and a lot of it is toxic and difficult.
“We’re having to look that in the eyes — in each other’s eyes. The writing of the show gave us a real opportunity to do something real and I feel incredibly proud of that.”
Of the characters, Jones added: “It’s also under extraordinary original circumstances in which we discover universal experience, and I think that’s what drama is all about.”
This year has been difficult for Jones, after his daughter Victoria was found dead aged 34 in the early hours of New Year’s Day at the start of the year.
Authorities did not suspect foul play in relation to her death, which was ruled as an accident caused by the toxic effects of cocaine.
At the time, her family said in a statement: “We appreciate all of the kind words, thoughts, and prayers. Please respect our privacy during this difficult time. Thank you.”
Victoria – whom Tommy had, as well as actor Austin Jones, 43, with his ex-wife, Kimberlea Cloughley – appeared in some of her dad’s movies, including 2002’s Men in Black II, and 2005’s The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada, which he directed.
In 2006, the 79-year-old actor revealed he fired her from Melquiades Estrada but later rehired her.
He told The New Yorker: “She’s a good actress, has her SAG card, speaks impeccable Spanish. When she was a baby, I told her nurse to speak to her in Spanish, but I fired my daughter [from the movie].
“She had to get up at 5 a.m. for her part. One morning, she wouldn’t get out of bed. I said, ‘Honey, this is work.’ But she wouldn’t budge, so I fired her. Then, without telling me, the production staff went over and woke her and rushed her out to the set just in time.”
