Actors Triptii Dimri and Madhuri Dixit reflected on the scrutiny they have faced at different stages of their careers. Their comments came as their upcoming project, Maa Behen, gears up for release. The film explores how women are perceived and labelled by society,

While Triptii opened up about being judged for films like Animal and the assumptions people make about female actors, Madhuri recalled how relatives questioned her decision to pursue acting after her debut film failed. Despite belonging to different generations, both actors agreed that women continue to face harsher judgment than their male counterparts.

Triptii on criticism and choice of roles

In an exclusive chat with India Today, Triptii admitted that while she tries not to let public opinion affect her, criticism does leave a mark. Sharing how she believes the scrutiny that followed Animal was unfair, the actor said, “It is difficult. I try to put on a strong face sometimes and be like, ‘No, it doesn’t affect me. I don’t get affected, or I am going to push it under the rug’. But it doesn’t work that way, it does somewhere, pinch you.”

The actor, however, remained unapologetic about the films she has chosen, as she said, “It is a film that I did, and I am proud of it. There is nothing about that film that I am not proud of. It is a choice that I made for myself, and I was comfortable with. And I think I am proud of every film that I have done, whether it is Bulbbul or whether it is Qala.”

“I think it is very important for me as an actor to make different choices. Otherwise, if you keep doing similar roles, then there is no growth for you. The intent has always been to do different roles and challenge myself a bit. Like when I got offered Maa Behen, I was like, ‘This is so difficult. How will I ever do it?’ And when I get that feeling, I know that this is something that I have to do,” she continued.

However, what frustrates her is how quickly women are judged. “It is not fair, I feel. We are very quick to judge. And only the girl,” Triptii said.

Madhuri recalls family doubts

Madhuri Dixit, meanwhile, recalled facing a different kind of judgment when she first entered the film industry – a career choice that wasn’t considered conventional in any Maharashtrian household at the time.

The actor revealed that after her first film Abodh (1984) didn’t work, and she started going back to college, relatives began advising her mother to pull her out of films altogether. “They used to tell my mom, ‘Why are you putting her in this? Don’t spoil her life. Let her get her education first,” the actor said.

What helped her stay the course was her mother’s unwavering belief in her, as Madhuri recalled, “My mom was amazing. She was such a strong woman. She said, ‘Is this what you want to do?’ I said yes. She said, ‘Then you should do it. Because if you do something you love, you will never work a day in your life’.”

The Fame Game actor also remembered being told she was ‘too skinny’ during her early years in cinema. But her mother’s response remained the same. “She used to tell me, ‘One day, when you get that one successful film, everything they say about you will change into positive feedback. So don’t worry about anything. You just keep working,” the actor said with a smile.

So, which was the film that changed her career trajectory, we asked. Pat came the reply, “Tezaab“.

Also starring Ravi Kishan and Dharna Durga, Maa Behen will stream on Netflix from June 4.
