Troye Sivan is putting his recent dating experiences to use by tackling his Gen Z fans’ most relatable relationship dilemmas as the next host of Bumble’s Bee Line.
The 31-year-old Perth-raised singer and gay icon is the latest host of Bumble’s dating advice YouTube series where people call in with their messiest dating dilemmas, and celebrities come to the rescue.
Sivan revealed that he’s “been dating a lot recently” and is ready to share his experiences to help others navigate the modern dating world.
“I opened up the phone lines at Bumble for a day to help answer burning questions from daters in Australia about red flags, playing hard to get, chucking a sickie, paying on the second date, gym selfies and more.
“My sister Sage even jumps in to help. I’m qualified for the Bee Line because they gave me a certificate from Down Under University that says so.”
A caller from London asked for Sivan’s assistance on what to do if their love interest has potentially hooked up with their ex-partner.
“I’ve been there,” he said.
“So maybe it’s a good thing, maybe it’s like you are both showing interest in similar qualities in a person and maybe you’ll find that in each other.
“I think it’s something to laugh about one day potentially if you can get past it, but I also understand if you can’t because it is a weird thing.”
Another caller from Perth sought expertise around how to curate a vibe in their house when inviting someone over for the first time.
Luckily, creating a vibe is Sivan’s forte, and he believed having a nice scent in the home is the key.
“I think the perfect time to light a candle before someone gets to your place is in the 15-to-20-minute window before arrival,” he said.
“The first thing someone experiences when walking into the house is the smell. Candles also contribute to the general ambience in the room.”
The Got Me Started hitmaker recommended “music and mood lighting” and absolutely “no overhead lights, especially not on a date”.
“You want lamps and candles. Create an atmosphere. We’re serving face and body, but we’re also serving a nice drink. Maybe you’ve got some food in the oven that smells really good. Nothing with too much onion or garlic, just in case you kiss later.”
A Melbourne caller posed the question: “Is chucking a sickie for a first date a red flag?”
Sivan admitted it was a “green flag” and “romantic” but also came at a risk of getting caught red-handed by employers.
“I had a friend who chucked a sickie for the first time in her entire life because I was in Perth and we were hanging out with Dua Lipa and we went to the beach with Dua Lipa,” he said.
“We got photographed by paparazzi on the beach, and she got caught chucking a sickie because she’s in the background of the photos when she should have been helping people at the hospital.”
Another caller from Melbourne asked for Sivan’s thoughts on whether playing hard to get ever works.
“There’s a balance I think, everyone likes a little bit of a chase but also communication is key,” he said.
“Don’t be crazy. Don’t be toxic. Don’t be weird. I think you should follow your gut. If you are excited to talk to the person I think you should talk to the person.”
Elsewhere in the episode he also told fans that it was nice to split the bill on dates or take turns in paying and to always ask questions on dates.
He also thought that having a go-to opening line on dating apps was “corny”.
