US President Donald Trump has offered the boss of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) the job of White House press secretary.

“I am pleased to announce that the Great Dana White, a violent Fighter and Warrior, has been offered the job of Press Secretary of the United States,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.

“Dana will be a Press Secretary like none other. Dana, please take the job!” the president added.

Broadcaster CNN later reported White had rejected the “unorthodox idea,” citing a person familiar with the matter.

Celebrity news website TMZ, however, reported White was due to meet Trump in the Oval Office on Monday to “talk things over,” citing sources with direct knowledge.

It remained unclear whether Trump was serious about the offer, which came days after the Democrats’ landslide victory in the US midterm elections.

Trump also said he had asked White to bring fighters from the UFC, the mixed martial arts organisation he heads, to serve as “assistants.”

“We need these people to defend us against the Lunatic Left,” Trump wrote.

The White House press secretary position has been vacant since October, when Katie Zacharia left the role after just a few days, having held only one press briefing.
