US President Donald Trump cast his ballot in the midterm elections on Saturday and said he voted for all Republican candidates in Florida before travelling to address a rally in Georgia, the Press Trust of India reported.

After voting, Trump defended a controversial campaign advertisement and his decision to challenge the official confirmation of a US Senate election result in Alaska under certain circumstances. He also commented on the war in Iran, while first lady Melania Trump addressed the possibility of travelling to Ukraine.

Trump and Melania arrived together at the Palm Beach County Supervisor of Elections office in West Palm Beach after the president spent the morning at his nearby golf course. Trump has previously faced criticism for voting by mail despite repeatedly opposing that method of casting ballots.

Asked whether he had voted for candidates along party lines, Trump, who was wearing an “I Voted” sticker, said, “Very much so.”

Speaking to reporters at the polling station, Trump again defended an advertisement released by Ohio Republican governor candidate Vivek Ramaswamy. The advertisement has faced strong criticism for featuring the estranged mother of Democratic rival Dr Amy Acton. Acton’s mother lost custody of her children after her husband, who was their stepfather, was indicted for raping Acton when she was 12, according to the Press Trust of India.

Trump also defended his decision to instruct his administration to file a lawsuit seeking to block the official confirmation of the US Senate election result in Alaska if Republican Senator Dan Sullivan loses. The proposed challenge concerns the inclusion of a second candidate named Dan Sullivan on the ballot.

Commenting on the war in Iran, Trump said, “I may have to finish it off. Or maybe they will make a deal, but I am not sure. Either way, we win.”

Melania Trump was asked whether she might travel to Ukraine after brokering a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine this week in Oleshky, a war-ravaged, Russian-occupied Ukrainian city. The ceasefire was intended to allow humanitarian aid to be delivered and civilians to be evacuated. “We will see,” she told reporters.

In Florida, Trump has endorsed Republican Representative Byron Donalds, who is contesting against David Jolly to succeed term-limited Governor Ron DeSantis. Jolly was previously a Republican and an independent before becoming a Democrat.

Trump has also campaigned for Republican Senator Ashley Moody, who is running against progressive state lawmaker Angie Nixon. The winner will serve the remaining two years of Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s former Senate term.

Trump’s vote in Florida came alongside his support for Republican candidates in the state, his defence of contentious campaign decisions and his remarks on Iran, Alaska and Melania Trump’s possible visit to Ukraine.
