It really did happen: Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce actually got married.

A formal announcement arrived around 7:30pm Friday (US time) when a representative for Swift sent out a statement confirming that the pop star and professional American football player had tied the knot.

“JUST&T MARRIED!” the email’s subject line said. A digital billboard outside Madison Square Garden displayed the same.

The couple did not have bridesmaids or groomsmen, according to the news release provided by the representative, Tree Paine. Swift’s brother, Austin, acted as her “man of honour,” while Kelce’s brother, Jason, served as his best man, according to the release.

Adam Sandler, the actor and comedian, officiated.

Here’s what else you need to know about the couple’s big night in midtown Manhattan.

Taylor. Travis. MSG. No joke

There was no fake out after all. For those who thought the idea of a mega-bash in the New York arena was misdirection for a different event at another location … sorry. After weeks of speculation about whether Swift and Kelce would actually choose the Garden to mark their nuptials, the show went on in Manhattan.

The reality became apparent as a cavalcade of black cars dropped off guests at MSG late Friday afternoon, amid a suffocating heat wave. Onlookers caught glimpses of some of the stars who were in them – including the likes of Jason Sudeikis and Hugh Grant – and then, just like that, Seventh Avenue cleared out.

The choice of the arena was a surprise to some who thought the 36-year-old bride might choose a far-flung destination or a romantic locale. But it allowed for privacy for a megawatt A-list couple. Kelce, also 36, is a star in his own right, a three-time Super Bowl champion with the Kansas City Chiefs.

There was a Met Gala-like air to the evening

Friday night’s party seemed to have it all: a highly calculated power guest list, with attendees from across the worlds of sports, Hollywood and music; oglers outside looking to take in some of the magic or eager to catch a glimpse of who was with whom and who was wearing what; and a black-tie dress code that seemed to allow guests to define fancy in their own terms.

As Vanessa Friedman, The New York Times′ chief fashion critic, : “Of all the gala evenings in what may be the most gala-stuffed city in the country (be they fundraisers or award shows or draft days, take your pick), Friday night’s festivities at Madison Square Garden qualified as among the most high-profile galas of all.”

“Hello, Met Gala,” she continued. “They saw you and borrowed the playbook.”

The newlyweds shared a designer

Taylor Swift said “I do” to a dress from Dior.

The statement provided by Paine confirmed that the designer of her wedding gown is Jonathan Anderson, the newish creative director of the French house, who, since he joined last year, has been charged with revitalising its global profile. NYT fashion critic Friedman said it “may be the single most high-profile dress of the year” and “a coup for Anderson”.

Kelce also wore an ensemble by the designer.

No photos of the dress had been released as of early Saturday.

The couple’s shoes were custom-made by Christian Louboutin, and the bride wore Cartier jewellery, according to the news release.

Attendees followed the rules and didn’t post

Friday’s affair had a no-phone policy for all guests, vendors and security, a person familiar with the plans told the Times. And well into Saturday morning, it appeared as if the people invited were playing by the rules: Sparse evidence of what happened inside the Garden appeared on social media.

Here are some of the details our reporting was able to confirm:

Music was in the air (and on the guest list)

Swift has spent more than half her life as a professional musician, so it wasn’t a big surprise that the wedding guest list was packed with stars from the music world: the Chainsmokers, Ed Sheeran, Sombr, the Chicks and Benson Boone, among many others. Aaron Dessner, of the band The National, who worked on several albums with Swift, was also seen heading to the wedding.

As for entertainment, Stevie Nicks, a friend of the bride, was anticipated to perform with Swift, as was Paul McCartney, as previously reported. But no footage from inside the venue had emerged as of early Saturday to confirm those performances.

Who else was there?

The guest list spanned the worlds of music and sport and celebrity – like the bride and groom themselves – and included Selena Gomez; actor Bradley Cooper and his girlfriend, model Gigi Hadid; even more actors like Grant and Sudeikis, Reese Witherspoon, Dakota Johnson, Ethan Hawke and Mariska Hargitay; and NFL stars Matthew Stafford, Cooper Kupp and many of Kelce’s Kansas Chiefs teammates.
