Two minor brothers in Jharkhand’s Ramgarh district died after their family relied on occult rituals and faith healing for several days instead of taking them to a hospital, while their mother remains in critical condition.
According to officials and local residents, Shankar Bedia’s 15-year-old son Ramkisun, 10-year-old son Sahil and his wife Sangeeta Devi developed high fever around the same time three to four days ago.

Instead of seeking immediate medical attention, the family reportedly believed that the illness was caused by supernatural forces. A tantric was called to the house, where rituals and chants were reportedly performed for three days.
However, the condition of all three patients continued to deteriorate.
When the two brothers lost consciousness, family members rushed them to Ramgarh Sadar Hospital. Doctors declared both children dead.
Sangeeta Devi’s condition also became critical, with her health deteriorating rapidly. She was referred to Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Ranchi for specialised treatment.
The exact cause of the illness has not yet been confirmed.
Following the incident, Patratu Block Development Officer Manoj Gupta visited the village and met the grieving family. He assured them of assistance and said efforts would be made to provide compensation in accordance with government rules.
As three members of the same family fell ill simultaneously, a team from the Public Health Engineering Department also visited the area and collected water samples from nearby hand pumps to determine whether contaminated water or an infection could have caused the illness.
The tragedy has been particularly devastating for the family as the children’s father, Shankar Bedia, is currently working in Odisha to earn a livelihood. The deaths of his two sons have left the family shattered, while his wife continues to battle for her life in hospital.
