Two people were killed when a light plane crashed south of Brisbane, near residential properties, on Monday morning.
The Beech A36 Bonanza aircraft took off from Archerfield Airport shortly after 11am.
It crashed 18 minutes later into a grassy field along Musch Road in the Logan suburb of Stockleigh.
Grass in the field caught fire after the crash, and a tree stump continued smouldering for hours.
At 12.15pm, firefighters said the blaze was under control.
About a dozen emergency vehicles remained in the early afternoon, but fire teams and ambulances began leaving before 2pm.
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau said they have commenced an investigation into the crash, anticipating a preliminary report will be published in about eight weeks.
“The ATSB has deployed a team of three transport safety investigators,” a spokesperson said in a statement.
“Once on site from Monday afternoon they will commence evidence-gathering activities including site and wreckage examination, and the recovery of any aircraft components of interest for further examination.
“Investigators will also interview any witnesses and involved parties, and collect relevant recorded information including flight tracking data, as well as pilot and aircraft maintenance records, and weather information.
“The ATSB asks anyone with video footage of the accident flight to contact us via the witness form on our website: atsb.gov.au/witness at their earliest opportunity.”
