Two Students Federation of India leaders at Maharajas College were suspended on Monday for allegedly disrupting an event where Kerala Higher Education Minister Roji M John was speaking, news agency Press Trust of India reported.

The students, who are the chairperson and vice-chairperson of the college students’ union, had questioned the suspension of 16 SFI members at Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, also known as Kalady University.

The SFI is the student wing of the CPI(M). Responding to the action, SFI state secretary P S Sanjeev told reporters that the suspension would not silence the questions raised by the organisation.

“Questions will be raised across the state against the suspension of the students. How many more will be suspended?” Sanjeev asked.

The 16 students at Kalady University were suspended following protests against Vice-Chancellor Ciza Thomas. They have been under suspension for more than two months for staging a mock cremation of the vice-chancellor and allegedly assaulting her.

The stand-off between the SFI and Thomas escalated after she and the university approached the Kerala High Court against a single-judge order that allowed the suspended students to register for their respective examinations.

The High Court on Monday reserved its verdict on the plea filed by the university and the vice-chancellor. The judgement is scheduled to be pronounced on Tuesday.

Later on Monday, the university’s Syndicate decided after a meeting that the suspension of 12 of the 16 students could be revoked if they submitted written apologies to the vice-chancellor, PTI reported.

Syndicate members told reporters that the suspension of the remaining four students would be extended by another two months because they had entered the university despite being under suspension.

The developments followed the suspension of the 16 Kalady University students, the legal challenge over their examination registration and the subsequent suspension of two SFI leaders at Maharajas College for allegedly disrupting the minister’s event.
