A 20-year-old woman and her younger sister were seriously injured after a man allegedly entered their house and opened fire on them in Ghaziabad’s Khoda area on Tuesday evening, police said.

The incident took place around 4:30 pm in Adarsh Nagar’s Valmiki Chowk locality. The injured women were rushed to Delhi’s Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital, where they are undergoing treatment.

According to police, the accused has been identified as Johnny, a resident of Baradari near the Old Bus Stand area. Preliminary investigation suggests that Johnny and one of the two sisters were known to each other and their marriage had been fixed about a year ago. However, the alliance was called off nearly four months ago.

Family members alleged that the accused was seen roaming in the locality for nearly half an hour before making his way to the upper floor of the house. On spotting him with a weapon, the two sisters reportedly locked themselves inside a room. The accused allegedly tried to break into the room by smashing a window and then fired multiple rounds at them.

The firing triggered panic in the neighbourhood as residents rushed to the spot after hearing gunshots.

Ghaziabad Police said they received information about the shooting at around 4:30 pm and immediately shifted both injured women to a hospital for treatment. Police added that the younger sister was shot while attempting to save the elder.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Trans-Hindon), Dhawal Jaiswal, said preliminary findings indicate that the incident may be linked to the broken marriage alliance between the accused and the victim. He said senior officers have inspected the scene and a case is being registered based on a complaint from the family.

Multiple police teams have been formed to arrest the accused, who remains absconding. Police said raids are being conducted and further legal action will be taken after a detailed investigation.
