IRGC reports fires on three vessels in Strait of Hormuz
The incident comes amid separate claims by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) about fires involving two oil tankers and a tugboat in the Strait of Hormuz.
In a statement carried by Iran’s semi-official Fars news agency, the IRGC alleged that the vessels caught fire after attempting to navigate what it described as an “unauthorised route” through the strategic waterway.
According to the statement, a large oil tanker struck a mine and caught fire while travelling through the southern passage of the strait. A second supertanker reportedly caught fire while exiting its eastern section. A tugboat dispatched to tackle the blaze also burst into flames.
The IRGC further claimed that its naval electronic warfare units had taken control of two US LUCAS drones, forcing them to land safely before seizing them intact.
The Iranian force blamed the United States for directing vessels through mined channels, alleging that the practice had increased financial and insurance costs for American taxpayers and regional allies.
