An Uber driver taking Argentina football fans to a World Cup match was among four people injured in a string of shootings in Kansas City, Missouri, that also left one man dead, police said. A 22-year-old male suspect, described by police as armed and dangerous, remained at large on Thursday.
Police said the five shootings took place on Tuesday between 6 pm and 6.30 pm over a 5-mile stretch of the city. Three happened on Interstates 70 and 670 as they pass through downtown, while the other two took place further east on Truman Road. All of the shootings were at least 4 miles from Arrowhead Stadium, where Argentina won its first match against Algeria.

Two American Argentina fans travelling to the match told Argentine outlet La Nacion that a vehicle pulled up alongside their Uber and two shots were fired, hitting the driver in the leg. They said they first thought a tyre had burst before realising the driver had been shot. The pair later went to a police station to give statements, after which officers drove them to the stadium in patrol cars. Police Captain Jacob Becchina said the driver’s injuries were not life-threatening.
Police said that shooting and two others on the interstates happened while vehicles were travelling east, including one coming from neighbouring Kansas. The other shootings took place further east on Truman Road, a major route through the city. Becchina said three adults and one minor, a teenager, were injured and all were hospitalised, though only one adult had life-threatening injuries.
At about 6.30 pm, officers responded to a report of a vehicle crashing into a pole on Truman Road, east of the other shootings. The driver was taken to hospital, where staff found what appeared to be a gunshot wound while treating him. He later died of his injuries. Becchina said in an email, “Victims all indicated they were driving down the highway or roadway when one or more shots were fired into their vehicles.” He added that detectives believe the non-fatal shootings happened “in close succession,” from west to east, and were linked to the same suspect.
Police later tracked the suspect to a home in the suburb of Independence, about 2 miles further east of where the man who died was found, and a standoff followed. But when officers entered the house at about 8 am on Wednesday, the suspect was not there. Officials in Kansas City, Kansas, also have a warrant against the suspect in connection with a June 11 case involving the illegal discharge of a firearm, police spokesperson Nancy Chartrand said. Police believe the shootings unfolded rapidly across the city, leaving four people injured, one man dead and the suspect still on the run.
